About Me

I’m Linus, and my journey from Ottawa’s political fishbowl to becoming a technology professional and social advocate has shaped both who I am and why I write.
Early Years in Ottawa
Growing up in Ottawa during the late 1970s and early 1990s gave me a unique perspective on Canadian politics. The capital’s tendency toward political navel-gazing (which persists to this day) formed my early understanding of governance. As a young and admittedly naive member of the Progressive Conservatives, I learned valuable lessons about political organization and community engagement. While some of my actions from that time make me cringe now, I’ve come to appreciate how every decision—good, bad, or questionable—has contributed to my current path.
Life-Changing Events
In 1992, my life took a dramatic turn when my mother was killed by her estranged partner. Her memory lives on through the Silent Witness Project. This tragedy led me to withdraw from politics entirely, my engagement replaced by anger and disillusionment.
American Chapter
My political interest rekindled in 2007 when I moved to New York City for work and love. Living in the US during the Obama administration (2009-2017) coincided with my female-to-male transition, which opened my eyes to broader social issues. I witnessed the struggles of LGBTQ+ youth abandoned by their families, fighting to survive on NYC’s streets. My work-related travel exposed me to diverse cultures and perspectives.
In 2010, Los Angeles became home. While I missed the Canada’s seasonal changes, particularly autumn’s colours, the West Coast offered new experiences. The 2016 election of Donald Trump marked another turning point. Despite earlier considerations of US citizenship (influenced by my late step-grandfather, who became a Canadian citizen in his 60s), the increasing social division, violence, and climate of fear became unbearable.
Return to Canada
By 2019, I knew it was time to come home. In early 2020, as the pandemic began, my partner and I packed up our three cats and embarked on an 11-day journey up the Pacific Coast and across Canada to Nova Scotia. After losing my position with a company I’d served for 19 years, I discovered Bluesky, which reignited my passion for political discourse.
Why This Blog
This blog represents my desire to separate my technical work from my political commentary. My views have shifted considerably left of centre, guided by a deep belief that society must balance compassion, understanding, and empathy with critical thinking.
I welcome thoughtful discussion and diverse perspectives, but I maintain a zero-tolerance policy for bullying and harassment.
This space is dedicated to fostering meaningful dialogue about the issues that shape our world.
